About

GLAS CENTRE OF LEARNING
The focus of Glas is to facilitate change.

We are a species who’s development over the last one hundred years has been primarily driven by the availability of fossil fuels. In that century we have consumed over 10 million years of solar energy as fossil fuel is basically plant material which absorbed solar radiation over millennia and turned to oil and gas due to forces of nature. This source of energy is nearing (if not passed) peak production whilst our demand for it is increasing rapidly.

Our whole way of life has shifted to a state of almost complete dependency on this energy source for survival. In doing so we have left behind us the many skills needed to survive in a world without it.
Our society is also suffering from the impact of the cheap and abundant energy source.(which is going to run out). Traditional skills, local enterprise, local food production, all part of rural life have all but disappeared. Social inclusion, rural community spirit and our whole value system has been affected by a desire for material goods which are produced by oil.

While it is broadly accepted that a shift towards environmentally sustainable lifestyles is imperative in preventing further environmental catastrophe we are seeing that awareness alone does not produce change. Understanding of how to go about the re-envisioning of society is a complex and deep learning process. No amout of media hype or government awareness campaigns will provide the mass population with the means to make significant change.

Education has internationally been recognised as the key to addressing environmental and social problems, however current education systems have developed along the same lines as industry with mechanisation and targets as the governing principles. Trying to fit environmental education into this structure does not allow for the level of whole systems thinking that is necessary to truely move on from the damaging mindset of consumerism and exponential growth that has detached us from the natural environment.  A centre dedicated to a new epistemology of how we can collectively see the world with care and conservation is the seed of the Glas Centre of Learning.

Our vision of the centre is to provide a model for society, for business and for individuals that is transformative for the greater good of us all.

“No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it. We have to learn to see the world anew. ” __ Einstein

Learning from the past, teaching for the future.

We believe that now and in the future people will return to more traditional ways of living that encompas creativity, material restraint, participative skills,  and a greater sense of responsibilty towards the environment and each other. Developing an educational institution that exisits as a microcosm of the newly emerging sustainable society is what we envisage at GLAS.

The Glas network of learning centres will provide a platform to reintroduce some of the lost gems of Irish traditional skills through educational workshops and courses. We extend our vision to include the holistic learning needs of the whole person, valuing emotional health as an important part of our society’s well being. As learning is a lifelong process we wish to provide an inclusive environment that welcomes people of all ages and from all areas of life.

Each Glas Centre will focus on local sustanability issues and will be connected to the community through a non heirarchical committee that is free to determine it’s own structure. Using imagination, enthusiasm and innovation we are embarking on many connected initiatives that will in turn inspire many more.
